Yup, some years ago I received a harassment complaint from an employee based on their Irish brogue.
A 2013 article claimed an Iraqi hotel worker filed an EEOC complaint against Four Points by Sheraton after being mocked by co-workers for his accent and using derogatory nick names. Because managers did not take the complaint seriously when reported by the Iraqi worker, the harassed employee won a $50,000 settlement.
Fortunately, our Irish employee’s complaint was investigated thoroughly. No discriminatory practices were found, but a group of employees received first step disciplinary warnings and attended class for diversity and anti-harassment training.
