Christmas has past and 2019 is just ahead. Now is the time to reflect on the present year’s achievements and struggles, whether that be for work or personal use. Some call it a self-assessment, a performance evaluation or an employee appraisal – the process forces us to take the time to reflect on all of the things we’ve been able to accomplish (or not) throughout the year. More importantly, it helps us to focus and to set goals for the coming new year. Here’s some tips to help you in the process:
1. Keep track of everything you accomplished through out the year with a simple excel spreadsheet. Look through your calendar, e-mail or files to help you remember the events. You will be amazed how much you accomplished. So often we’re focused on what didn’t get done and we forget how successful we actually were over the course of the year.
2. Highlight the top 3 to 5 accomplishments for the year. Keep in mind while you had a great year, no one wants to read a 5-page report on why you are the most valuable member of the team.
3. List 3 disappointments or things that didn’t get accomplished during the year. You don’t need to spend too much time on what went wrong or excuses for not getting to all of your goals. However, this part of the review will help you to focus on how to better accomplish your 2019 goals.
4. And of course, set your goals for 2019. Choose 3 to 5 goals for self-improvement, performance improvement, goals to help your career, family or employer’s business.

While I wouldn't mentioned the pre-paid vacation during the interview, I would ask for that time off after being offered the job.
Most jobs don't offer paid time off in the start of the job. It's usually accrued or paid vacation after your first year of employment. But if you let them know before you start that you have a pre-planned event where you need time off. Most employers will allow you to take the time off without penalty and without pay.
