"Don't pick a job. Pick a boss. Your first boss is the biggest factor in your career success. A boss who doesn't trust you won't give you opportunities to grow." William Raduchel
I've been fortunate that most of my supervisors were wonderful mentors. My first "boss" out of college was Doug Farrell. He was the Advertising Manager for the Daily Telegram in Adrian, Michigan. He taught me more than designing display advertisements. He taught me the art of sales, making presentations, building relationships for future sales and more importantly, for returning sales. He also taught me how to think outside of the box. Upon learning that I was expecting my first child, I was called into the Publisher's office. Mr. Krout told me that I had just passed on what could have been - a promising future. Mr. Krout not only lost my respect that day, but he was also very wrong about the end of my career. This happened before FMLA and I had to quit my job at the newspaper due to complications during my pregnancy. While at home, I was contacted by one of my former newspaper clients. He asked if I would continue to design his sales flyers. Knowing that this could be a clear conflict with my former employer, I contacted Doug Farrell. He not only supported the idea, but encouraged me to accept the outside work. I began to design the sales flyers for Spielman's from home during my pregnancy. It ended up as a true win for both of us. This kept our client happy. It provided extra income for my family while I was unemployed and Doug benefited from it as an added insert in the newspaper. After my son was born, I was rehired by the newspaper. While I haven't kept in contact as well as I should have, I will always be grateful that Doug Farrell was my first boss/mentor - very grateful indeed!

This new business found me, instead of me finding it.
After I retired as a human resources director, I reconnected with many former co-workers throughout my 25+ years of service. It was rewarding to me to learn that I had made a difference in other's lives - whether it was in hiring them, helping them with insurance problems, coaching when they struggled at work, or even one that was fired, but who went on to a happier and more successful job afterwards. I also helped family and friends with their resumes, coached their interview skills and helped to find the jobs they desired. This past October, I was contacted by a friend and former employer. Knowing that I wasn't working, I was asked if I was interested in helping to fill 45 jobs by November 1st. I couldn't wait to get started. Since this project would be for an out of state company...the time was right to start Engage Employment Solutions, LLC. My kids smiled when they heard the news; they had told me upon retirement that after a well deserved rest, I would be anxious to serve once again. They were right. Give me a call or e-mail whether you are an employer with an HR project or job seeker needing a new resume - let me help with your goals. |
